Poem: Transformation ( Dubai Diaries — 6)

A short poem of how a grain of sand transforms from a beach element into a desert element. I am in Dubai for #COP28 and so wrote this poem as I related my presence to Jacob Berghoef’s artwork and poetry.

‘Evening Sky Lullaby’ is an artwork in my collections ‘Evening Falls’ and ‘Infinite Sea’.

Verse: Evening Sky Lullaby

The waves softly sing
their lullaby on the shore
The evening sky answers
in colors that die in the sand

At the end of a calm winter afternoon, even if it is cold, it is wonderful to sit on the beach for half an hour as the sun sets. A calm sea sings its song as the waves hit the beach, and slowly the colors fade to calm shades of gray. The evening begins, time to return to the warmth of home.

Here is the poem I wrote.

Poem: Transformation

The golden sands blush
One last time
Bidding adieu to the sea

Lift off by the soft breeze
A transformation is on
From a sailor to a bedouin.

Dubai in December is hot. They say it is unusual. I am here for #COP28 and it is sweating under my two-piece suit.

Poem: The 1.5C

Entry gate at COP28, Dubai

Bright blinding light
Hot and sweaty
Under the two-piece suit
This is winter
In the Marhaba city
A climate meet
Warning about heat
Specifically, 1.5C
A number to avoid
Sun is merciless
Can we be merciful
To our children?

Women in kids
Sparkling and laughing
In black Abayas
Groomed black beards
Dressed in white robes
Kandura or Dishdasha
I ask — can we have
more green around?

America and Europe
India and Africa
China, Japan, and Korea
showcasing their wares
Gadgets and finance
They say are the tools
I say it is our ways
Of greed and consumption
We need to avoid
Adopt biomimicry
To win -
This race away from fossil fuels
This race to not become fossils
Make this planet livable

Climate change is here
The December heat
Reminds us again
Of the 1.5 C.
