Poem: Abhinaya Arangetram ( Tamil)
January 22, 2023 will remain etched in my memory. It is my first poem in Tamil, and my first recital in Tamil on an august stage.
I wrote this poem in Tamil, extempore, inspired by the beautiful graduation performance called ‘arangetram’, in a structured format. My wife, Gayathri is an accomplished bharatanatyam dancer and teacher. Her student learned the advanced form of the art with another Guru and my wife’s friend Meenakshi.
I accompanied Gayathri who participated in the occasion as a chief guest. Inspired by the performance of Abhinaya, I composed this poem. It turned out to be my launch as a Tamil Poet, as I presented this poem on stage in the famous Krishna Gnana Sabha, an august stage that hosts the December Season Concerts.
Poem: Abhinaya’s Arangetram
அபிநயா என்ற பெயர்
பிறப்பிலேயே ஒரு அறிகுறி
இது இறைவனின் இச்சையோஇரு சிறிய பாதங்கள்
கொலுசுக்கு பதில் சலங்கை
ஓடும் சத்தத்திற்கு பதில்
ஆடும் சத்தம்எட்டு வருட இடைவெளி
எட்டாத ஆசையோ?
இல்லை.
ஆர்வம், ஆசை
அதற்கு மேல் ஒரு வெறி.இதற்கு ஒரு வழி — மார்க்கம்
கை பிடித்து குரு மீனாட்சி
பயிற்சி பயிற்சி பயிற்சியால்
இந்த முயற்சிக்கு ஒரு முடிவு
இந்த அரங்கேற்றம்.அபிநயா
சலங்கையிட்ட உன் சிறு பாதங்கள்
இன்று இறைவனின் முன்னால்
சிறந்த வாய்பாட்டு, நட்டுவாங்கம்
இன்னிசை மிருதங்கம் மற்றும் வயலின்உன் ஆடலில் ஆடலரசனை கண்டேன்
கண்ணுக்கு தெரியாத கண்ணனை கண்டேன்
கலையின் கடலில் மூழ்கி முத்து எடுத்தேன்
உன் நாட்டியத்தின் அந்த பக்கம்
ஒரு உலகத்தையே கண்டேன்பரதநாட்டியம் ஒரு ஆத்ம அர்ப்பணம்
இந்த கலையின் கவிதையால்
மேலும் பல அரங்கை
அழகு படுத்த
என் வாழ்த்துக்கள்.~அஷோக் சுப்ரமணியன்
The English translation:
Your name Abhinaya
A prophecy at birth
Is it God’s will?
Your two small feet
The dancer’s anklet instead of the child’s
Responding the dance steps
instead of the child’s innocent runs
After a gap of eight years
Is this an unattainable desire?
No.
It is interest, desire
More than that…a burning passion.
Now on a path
Holding the hands of Guru Meenakshi
Practice and practice
The culmination of this effort
This arangetram.
Abhinaya
Your little feet with those dancing anklets
dance before God
Following the music and nattuvagam
supported by mridangam and violin.
I see the King of Dance in your performance
I see the invisible Krishna in it
I see an unexplored world on the other side.
Bharatanatyam is an offering of the soul.
May you take the poetry of this art
and beautify many other arenas
For that, my wishes.
